Leanna Elizabeth (Buchanan) Fishback was born March 20, 1943, in Shelbyville, TN.
Leanna was the daughter of Rosa Lee Buchanan and Willie Lee Buchanan. She transitioned her life’s journey on May 3, 2024. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Andrew Buchanan, Robert T. Sims, and George W. Buchanan and seven sisters; Mary E. Sims, Irene Boyd, Jennie Mae McCory, Rosie Lee Marks, Ollie Claybrooks, Wilma C. Buchanan, and Bettie Lou Ferguson.
Leanna played basketball during her high school years and league basketball during her adult years until the league ended. She also played league softball for over two decades where she usually played third base, which she played very well. Leanna used her softball skills to coach a “winning” girl’s league for several years.
Leanna accepted Christ at an early age and united with Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she was dedicated, devoted, faithful and very active. She would later unite with Bird Street Church of Christ after she married her husband Paul. Leanna willingly assisted where needed to serve at both assemblies. Leanna was an active member of the Rosenwald Community Center and the Bedford County Juneteenth Committee. She was instrumental and dedicated to the start-up of both organizations.
In 1967, Leanna was blessed with a son, Terrell Demanche’ Buchanan, aka Doe! Doe was Leanna’s pride and joy, and they shared an unbreakable bond. Leanna, aka “Lula” was known for her love of her grandchildren and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for them. Leanna’s sense of humor and ability to provide support to anyone who asked was something special. When asked for advice, she would listen and often say “don’t worry about it” Leanna loved to provide her nieces and nephews with nicknames that still stand today.
Leanna united in marriage with James Paul Fishback in 1981, however, their relationship spanned over 57 years.
One of Leanna’s favorite songs was, “You Will Know,” by Black Men United. Her favorite singing artist was Whitney Houston, and her favorite gospel song was, “Oh, How I Love Jesus.”
Leanna was employed with Model Sportswear, Bedford County Nursing Home and retired from Jostens of the South in 2006 after thirty-four years of service.
Leanna (Lula) leaves to cherish her legacy and memory: husband; James Paul Fishback, son: Terrell (Doe) Demanche’ Buchanan, a very devoted daughter-in-law; Tina Gray Buchanan, grandson; Tristan Demanche’ Buchanan, granddaughter; Kassidy Danay Buchanan, bonus grandchildren; Jayton Taylor Gray and Alexis Keanu Cleveland, Goddaughter; April O’Day Snipes, siblings; Emma Jean Lentz, Rose Marie (Bobby D) Peacock, Wilkie T (Diana Lee) Buchanan, Willie Lee “Termite” Buchanan, Jr., all of Shelbyville, Tennessee, and Josephine (Frank E.) Frazier of Rockvale, Tennessee. She leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends that will miss her warm smile, sense of humor and welcoming hugs.
