Hurley Sidney Richard Herbert Hoover Murray affectionately called “Richard” was born November 30, 1928 to the late Eudaly and Henrietta Garrett Murray. He entered a peaceful rest on December 7, 2018 at Tennova Healthcare Hospital.
Richard was born in Williamson County Tennessee. He attended school but only had a 5th grade education. He was needed to help support his mother and siblings as his father passed away when he was 7 years old. On December 18, 1946 he married Odesser Batts and to this union seven children were born of which Melissa Dawn and Martha Jean precede him in death. He was a farmer, a hunter, and a plant laborer, and an all-around guy who enjoyed the gift of life. His favorite pastime was eating, picking, and peddling turnip greens. Many called him the “turnip green man”.
He accepted Christ at an early age and united with the Haley Church of God, Sanctified, now known as the New Haley Church of God, Sanctified Inc. Brother Murray loved people and loved good services, especially the singing. You’d know he was in the place because he clapped his hands the loudest when he enjoyed the music. When the preaching took place, he’d always say Amen to the truth unless he was sleep.
In addition to his parents & daughters, he is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Sidney and Alice Garrett; sisters, Hattie Lou, Alberta, Viola Mae, Martha, and Clara; brothers, Shelley, Ben, and Sanford “Hamp”.
In addition to his wife, he leaves to cherish his memory, 5 loving and devoted children, Sarah (Harold) Bean, Elaine (Robert Cecil) Johnson, Richard “Bubba” Murray, Jerry (Carolyn) Murray, and Rev. Sharon (Leon) Ogilvie; 16 loving and devoted grandchildren; a host of great and great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Lillie, Ella Mae, Gladys, Agather; brothers-in-law, Burnice and Melvin, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
