Preston Woods, Jr. was born March 30, 1940, in Rutherford County, Tennessee to the later Preston Palmer Woods, Sr. and Queenie Victoria Crawford-Woods, the first child out of 14 children. He departed this earthly life at St. Thomas Rutherford on Thursday, July 7, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.
Preston, Jr. graduated from Holloway High School in 1959 and his first job right out of high school was at Christy Coal Company until he was drafted in the United States army where he served two years. After returning from serving his country, he obtained a job at Samsonite and was a supervisor for many years. After retiring from Samsonite, he got restless and got a part-time job at the VA Hospital. He worked there until his retirement in 2003. He was a faithful member of the Tennessee National Guard for 25+ years.
He professed a hope in Christ at an early age at Mt. Zion Barfield Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Mayfield.
Preston Jr. was preceded in death by his father and mother, the late Preston and Queenie Woods; brothers, Kenneth Woods and Robert Fare Woods.
Though we are deeply saddened at this time of our painful loss, Preston Jr., leaves to cherish his beautiful memories, a wife of 20 years, Ida Ward Woods; and to carry on his legacy, his devoted children, Preston Rankins of Nashville, TN, Veronica Woods of Atlanta, GA, Robbie Woods-Matthews, Reginal (Henrietta) Sanders, Wanda Stewart, Timothy (Brenda) Carney of Murfreesboro, TN, Curtis Smith of Jackson, AR, Felicia (Robert) Holman, Maurice Woods, all of Murfreesboro, TN and Preston Woods, III of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren, Malik Woods of Atlanta, GA, Aliyah Watkins, Brandon Stewart, Lyniah Stewart, Isaiah Stewart, Tim Carney, Jasmine Carney, Alexandria Holman all of Murfreesboro, TN, and Aaron Smith, Rafael Smith of Jackson, AR; great grandchildren, Tim Carney, Isaiah Carney and Maya Stewart all of Murfreesboro, TN; sisters, Addie (Houston) Wellington, Gertrude (Martin) Bracey, Ruth Davis, Frances Frazier and Elizabeth Scales; brothers, Frank Woods, George Woods, Johnny (Juanita) Woods, Jesse (Sandra) Woods, Tony Woods and Jimmy (Amable) Woods, all of Murfreesboro, TN; sisters-in-law, Margaret Ward, Florence Freeman and Gloria Walker; brothers-in-law, Joe (Annie Ruth) Ward and Gilbert Ward; aunt, Queenie V. Woods; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Preston will be remembered as a person who brought much joy and laughter to his family and friends. He embraced life with a passion and was always the life of the party. He had a fun-loving personality, with a charisma no one shall forget. He was lovingly known as “Old Man” by his daughter Wanda every time she greeted him, and he responded with, “Hey Old Girl”.
The cherished memories of Preston Woods, Jr. beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother and Friend will remain etched in our heats forever. Preston loved his family more than life and will be sadly missed by all his family and friends who loved him dearly.
