Mrs. Gencie Mai Newman was born on April 19, 1920. At the age of 100, on Tuesday March 30, 2021 she left this earthly life.
She was a member of Brandon View Baptist in Christiana which later changed to God’s House of Restoration for 80 years. She began under the leadership of Pastor Blackman and also serving under Pastor John Brown, John Minter, Ernest Norman, Frank Kelley and Pastor Michael Odom. Mrs. Newman worked in the cafeteria at Oakland High School for several years.
Mrs. Gencie was preceded in death by her parents, Roberta and Horace Smith, Sr.; husband, Joe Newman, Jr.; daughter, Mildred Freeman Spann; granddaughter, Sophia (Erik Hines) Freeman; grandson, Joseph Freeman; sister, Margaret Baker; brother, Horace Smith, Jr.; and son-in-law, Thomas William Freeman, Sr.
She is survived by one grandson, Thomas (Cuturia) Freeman; one sister, Lolies Jean Newman; 11 great grandchildren; 16 great great grandchildren; niece, Vivian “Faye” (Andrew) Miller and Beverly Murray; nephews, Horace Smith and Donald (Florence) Smith; first cousin, Dora Nell Freeman; along with a host of other relatives and friends. A special thank you to Erik Hines and the Hospice staff.
