Velma Beard Chatman was born November 4, 1932 to the late Jack and Laura Beard in Whiteville, TN. She took her heavenly rest on the afternoon of Sunday, November 25, 2018.
At an early age Velma confessed faith in Jesus Christ joining Johnson Chapel C.M.E. church. She attended Hardeman County schools and earned her BA degree from Lane College in 1955.
After graduating from Lane Velma relocated to Springfield, TN where she joined Beard’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church and served on the Mother Board and taught Sunday School. Velma later joined Greater White’s Chapel C.M.E. where served as a member of the Stewardess Board and Missionary Society and taught Sunday School.
Velma touched many lives through the years as an elementary teacher with Robertson County Schools where she retired after teaching for over 40 years.
Velma married Melvin Chatman and to this union six children were born. She was proceeded in death by her parents; children, Jackie, Melvin Jr, and Jeff; a daughter-n-law, Linnett; brothers, Earl, Enoch, Eroy and Frank, and sisters, Mildred, Essie, and Geneva.
Velma leaves to cherish her memory children, Carol (Robert) Merritt, Bobby Chatman of Nashville, TN and Karl (Sylvia) Chatman of Goodlettsville, TN; daughters-in-law, Dorthea Chatman of Antioch, TN and Lisa Chatman of Franklin, TN; sister, Wilma Lee of Amherst, VA, sister-in-law, Joella Beard; grandchildren, great grandchildren, godson Beachy Frazier; devoted friend, Laura Frances Hilliard; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
